And that’s when there was the—in terms of the Vietnam War—that many campuses were really getting active. One of the things that was so wonderful at Mundelein, both for students as well as for faculty like me, is that we had all our fights, but it was a learning community. So when I refer to that first year particularly, because the strike took place, I believe, in the Spring of 1970…The value of that war, many people in academics—and I think that I like—they believe in the value of discourse, the value of intellectual debate. Yet in many places in our society, in our politics, and in many cases our universities, there is a paucity of real debate. People are as cowardly there as they are in other places. So to have this full-fledged debate student and faculty—‘Should we do this? Should we have a strike? Wait a second, if we have a strike that’s not fair to the ones who are going to graduate. Or that’s not fair to this. Well, but on the other hand, at a time like this when people are dying and they shouldn’t be, we’ve got to change the rules.'" No jeans, none of that kind of thing. In fact, the women who used to live in the residence hall could not even go to the dining hall in jeans or slacks. They had to wear dresses all the time. Many times they’d roll up their jeans and put their coats on. And we knew that. But it was the students who asked Sister Ann Ida. Sherry was her name. She said to Sister Ann Ida, ‘You know, we don’t want a dress code anymore.’ And Sister Ann Ida said, ‘I can’t change that myself. I’ll give you time at the faculty meeting.’ And Sherry—I remember her to this day—just got up and said, ‘I’m just here representing the students as the Student Body President to tell you that we no longer have a dress code. You’ll see us looking differently.’ And she walked out." We had our own problems on campus in 1975, ’76, when sort of the ‘black revolution’ took place. I was part of it. We had a woman, we’re good friends today, was director of the black students. There was a total misunderstanding going on. The students really rebelled against administration and everybody. But we had a young student—a young black student, Diane Allen, who helped our black students more than any single person than I can think of. She got them leveled off before they ended the year, and they had a good feeling. But we did struggle." In ’69 when we had the strike and all that kind of thing, I never saw such networking as when Kent State occurred, that happened in the college and university campuses. It was just like overnight that this all happened. I happened to be acting dean that year. It was hard. It was hard for the students, it was hard for everybody. We had long meetings, students and faculty, where we filled Galvin Hall. People would say, ‘Well, we should strike until the end of the war.’ We wouldn’t even be here if we did that. So that didn’t happen. But we gave the faculty and students the opportunity to do what they wished. And that was a pretty big order…The faculty met with their students and came to some kind of a consensus on whether they would come to regular classes, whether they would do their readings or whatever on their own. They had to sign a contract to do this. So everybody was doing what she wanted." I just took it for granted; and they had friendship, etc. When Martin Luther King was shot the black students from Coffey Hall disappeared over into Northland with black kids who had apartment living over there. We didn’t see them for 24 hours. When they came out, they had stopped speaking to anybody white. I was in the enviable position of living in the dorm, trying to handle this. White kids coming in, crying ‘Sister…’ One night a black kid came in, closed the door and just threw herself in my arms and wept, and said, ‘I’m leaving, I’m transferring, I’m going to Morehouse.’ I said ‘Why Diane?’ and she said, ‘because my friends’ (many of them were white, she was an English major), ‘we’re not speaking to them. I can’t live like that.’ I had kids come into me privately and talk." What I want to bring out here is that the Vietnam War was going on, and in residence where the freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors lived on every floor—so Judy and Ann Jones with their handsome cadets. When they came on campus I would let them change into civilian clothing in the guest room. When the Vietnam War began, the kids who were anti-war as I was, as most as our nuns were—broke the hearts of Ann and Judy. They would say, ‘How does it feel to date a killer?’ Friendships ended in the dormitories and some students were angry with me because they felt I was more friendly to the students who were anti-war—which I was." Everybody there with few exceptions…But in the main it was pretty Roman Catholic and I think the parents, our parents, my parents certainly sent me there because it would buttress my family orientation, my education to date and mature that…The other part of my assertion though is that underneath that overtly Catholic orientation was another one that was really never articulated in any direct way. And I think it was one that gave us a sense of woman, of the role of women in the world, of social justice… So I think if you had to say was there anything clearly articulated in the mission statement or anything which said, now you’re a woman you’re equal you’re free you have a responsibility to the world, to the community."
