1960 to 1969

1960 M.S. curriculum in dental science is established.
1962 The Rome Center for Liberal Arts is opened, the first program sponsored by an American university in Rome. It remains the largest program of its kind in Western Europe. Pere Marquette Center, a combination study and social center for students, opens next to Lewis Towers.

1963 Loyola's Men's Varsity Basketball team wins the NCAA tournament, becoming the first and only team from Illinois to win the National Championship.

1964 The Institute of Pastoral Studies is formed. The graduate program in Nursing is established. Loyola runner Tom O'Hara sets the world record for the indoor mile at 3:56.4.
1965 The Center for Research in Urban Government is established to train specialists and researchers in urban government.

1966 The Lake Shore Campus officially becomes co-ed. An M.B.A. program is initiated to meet the demand for more highly trained executives. A doctoral program in Classical Studies is approved. Damen Hall, a 10-story science classroom building, is constructed on the Lake Shore campus. The Dental Assistants program is established.

1967 The Stritch School of Medicine moves to its new building at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. The Department of Anthropology is formed. An in-service training program is formed in the School of Social Work. The Master's program in Biology is approved.

1968 Construction is completed on the 19 story Mertz Hall dormitory, Centennial Forum student center, and Mullady Theatre at Lake Shore Campus. Loyola builds a 451 bed University teaching hospital (Foster G. McGaw Hospital), Ambulatory Care Center, and Dental School to form the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. The Julia Deal Lewis Library in Lewis Towers is completed; an addition is built for Cudahy Library on the Lake Shore Campus; and Niles College affiliates with Loyola.
1969 The Oral Hygienists training program is established at the Dental School. The School of Education is established. Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood is officially opened. The Martin D'Arcy Gallery of Art opens.
