However, in the eyes of many Europeans the reductions of Paraguay represented nothing more than an attempt by the Society of Jesus to gain secular power and influence in the Americas. With the decline of the fortunes of the Society after the middle of the eighteenth century, works critical of the “Jesuit kingdom” in Paraguay proliferated.
