Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Clavigero all his life retained a deep enthusiasm for pre-Columbian Mexican history. His Storia antica del Messico was written to refute the errors and misinformation perpetuated in European works on Latin America in general and Mexico in particular, and is noteworthy for its systematic arrangement, clear style and sympathetic portrayal of Mexican civilization, as well as for its many engraved illustrations.
