Poetic Descriptions
The Imago primi saeculi Societatis Iesu (“Representation of the First Century of the Society of Jesus”) is a collection of Latin prose and verse pieces written to celebrate the first centennial of the Society. The poems are by Sidronius de Hossche, Jacques van de Walle and other Jesuit poets of the Baroque era; the fine emblematic illustrations which accompany them are by the seventeenth-century Flemish artist-engraver Cornelis Galle, and represent the achievements of the Society in mission work, theology, education and the arts.
