Franz Benno Ducrue, 1721-1779

“Specimen lingaue Californicae”

Ducrue was born in Munich of a French family. After joining the Jesuits, he was sent to the missions of California, where he served until the expulsion of the Society from the region in 1767. Each of the brief phrases in this “specimen” of the Laymon Indian language is accompanied by a Latin translation.
